Concussion and brain injuries have a major impact in recreational, youth and elite sporting environments. The damage caused not only affects the individual, but extends to their families and communities.
At SMG Technologies we recognise the importance of gaining an increased understanding into traumatic brain injuries such as concussion. Working with experts in the field including Specialist Consultant Dr Andrew Gardner, we have explored the benefits of having an inbuilt concussion management protocol within our products.
This has been developed with the intention of monitoring recreational, youth and elite users. The more information gained surrounding the issue of concussion and other traumatic brain injuries will aid with the development and implementation of future preventative strategies.
SMG Technologies Neuroscience Specialist Consultant Dr Andrew Gardner has conducted research in the field of sport-related concussion for the past eight years.
During this time, he completed studies at Harvard Medical School, an invaluable opportunity to access the latest technology and join world-leading academic colleagues at the Institute of Psychiatry to develop a greater understanding about concussion and traumatic brain injury, and other neurological and psychiatric syndromes.
He has contributed to the policy papers of Brain Injury Australia and Alzheimer’s Australia (NSW).
Dr Gardner has now turned his focus toward the potential long-term consequences of participation in collision sports, working with SMG Technologies on an online product ‘Head Zone’. Head Zone is a sports concussion management tool, which is currently under rigorous scientific testing in association with Dr Gardner, for current athletes of all ages, their schools and parents, along with retired athletes who may be experiencing cognitive difficulties.
“I’m very passionate about sport-related concussion both from a clinical and research perspective. For the best part of the last past six or so years I have devoted myself to becoming thoroughly versed in the research of this field in order to make my own significant contributions to the field through sound research”.
